The big question, watching the parade of broadcasters and coaches on learning permits, is not why should the Phoenix Suns bring in a proven broadcasting commodity, but why would Marvin Philip Aufrichtig accept the position?
Normally, I would suggest that a season on the bench of a pro NBA basketball team would really round out a broadcaster's knowledge and perspective and raise his art to the next level. However, we're talking about Marv Effing Albert. The Prince Albert, so to speak. 41 years of broadcasting. There is no mountain for Marv left to climb. His knowledge of the game is second to none. Coaching the Suns is probably beneath him at this point in his career.
However, there are other reasons he might do it. Here's a few:
[1] Get the old broadcast team back together. Steve Kerr, Marv Albert and I know Doug Collins is in town. What a team!
[2] After 40 years of calling the game after plays happen, wouldn't it be a kick to call the plays in advance?
However, the real reason he should do it: Out of pity for the great fans of the Phoenix Suns, a team who's title hopes have been left as dry as the Salt River by wanton mismanagement. Marv, if you're reading this, do it for the fans. Coach the Suns to a title, please!
